Many roles

We're having a weekend heat wave and it's important to stay all the way inside at least until Tuesday, but maybe beyond then. It's bad: 100-degree days before looking at the heat index. Summer's last gasp is crushing us, so of course I decided to remain indoors by getting out of the house for binge shopping. I suspect there's an element of depression to that for me, but the cats also needed some alone time. It all works out.

The gaming group that I met up with earlier this year includes someone that I may have shared early Internet BBS time with a couple decades ago, and a guy from a local Star Wars X-Wing Miniatures group that I left around the time COVID-19 arrived in force. They're a fun bunch; since I joined we've played Android: Shadow of the Beanstalk (in a homebrew setting), 13th Age, and a one-shot Alien adventure set between the first and second installments in the film franchise. Next week is Session 0 for our new outing set in Midgard using the newly released Tales of the Valiant, based on Dungeons & Dragons 5E.

As you might suppose, the group mostly chooses High Fantasy scenarios, but I'm always angling to go in other directions. The world of role-playing games is much farther flung than it was 40 years ago; I'd just as soon play (or try to run) sessions of G.I. Joe, Cowboy Bebop, Doctor Who, Vaesen (Nordic horror), and upcoming indie projects like Eldritch Automata (mechs vs. cosmic horrors), ION Heart (more mechs), and Wires in the Woods.

I've backed cool projects online; the books will be fabulous reading even if I don't get to play the games often. Today was just about loitering in nifty game shops and coming away with great swag in hand. Watch this space for adventure journaling — plus whatever else.
